Wingate, a prominent Massachusetts-based financial services firm, has discontinued Worldox, an on-premise provider, and selected NetDocuments and XLR8 as their integrated cloud-based solution for document and client management.

Wingate Wealth Advisors announced it has selected NetDocuments and XLR8 as their integrated document, email, and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform. "Wingate decided to switch to NetDocuments because of their cloud-based offering and their seamless integration with our CRM system, XLR8, which is built on the Salesforce.com platform," Mark Greco, the firm's Chief Operating Officer, stated. "As a firm, we are trying to upgrade our technology by moving many of our key applications from our own servers to the cloud, and NetDocuments fits this strategy perfectly."

There is no shortage of subpar consumer services available to store documents and data. Should you, as a firm and practicing professional, be using these to store and access client documents and confidential information? The answer should be a resounding no. Performing a quick web search on data security breaches for many of the consumer services returns a staggering amount of posts, ranging from hacked accounts, to leaked passwords, to complete data loss. For over a decade, NetDocuments has been solving the document management security concerns for firms all over the world. Here are some key questions and answers to navigate the complexity of client data and confidentiality.

On September 18^th, 70,000 people will descend on San Francisco for Salesforce.com's Dreamforce conference. For four days people from around the globe will learn how to better use the leading web based CRM system, and look for other applications and services found in the enormous ecosystem of consultants, apps and independent software vendors, like us. We'll be busy at booth 237 and connecting with our partners, but if you were one of the lucky ones to find a hotel in the city, be sure to stop by – at least for the booth swag!

Apparently we're all workaholics. Did you know that according to a recent survey, 80% of people continue working after leaving the office? This is a good thing for the firm, more working people = more things getting done. BUT, since a large portion of this work is accomplished on mobile devices, this introduces two big issues 1. Are they secure? And 2. The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) revolution.

In the September/October 2011issue of The Pennsylvania Lawyer, published by the Pennsylvania Bar Association, practicing attorney and technology consultant, Shannon Brown, provides a very thoughtful and informative primer on the "why's and wherefores" of cloud computing. His article offers some important background for attorneys attempting to understand the "alphabet soup" of current cloud computing terminology.

"Everything we do, we do differently than we did 18 months ago. We've reengineered the entire firm to change the client experience," said John Ohmer, CEO of YellowBrickRoad Financial Advisors. "It's made portfolio reporting and financial advising completely different than anything we've ever experienced."

What John and his team did was to go boldly to a place where they had not gone before...that place is called the cloud.

NAPFA National was the first financial services conference we have attended that was not a technology specific conference, so we weren't sure how many advisors would be there looking for technology solutions...turns out, nearly all of them were.

After spending the week talking about the cloud and hearing from the source what financial planners want from their technology to serve their clients, here is some of what we learned:

Investment banking is complex enough, anyone alive in 2008 can attest to that. Now couple that with the difficulty of sharing information in a secure and compliant way across offices and firewalls.
